Thank you for your interest in the Triangle Debate League (TDL) 2022 in-person summer camp at Cary Academy!
We will be offering a weeklong program between July 18-22, full of live and interactive debate coaching sessions, which culminates in a mock session of Congress where student congressional competitors will hone their newly acquired skills through debating bills concerning prominent current event topics. The camp is free of charge, attended at Cary Academy, and is open to students who have a faculty sponsor or permission from parent/guardian.
Student participation in debate has been numerically shown to improve test scores, graduation rates, college admission rates, attendance rates and overall academic performance. Debate teaches the skills of public speaking, critical analysis, current event engagement and research. More importantly, it is a fun and rewarding activity that enables students to express their informed views on the most important issues of our time.
Students must be able to spend 4 hours a day in structured, in-person activities between Monday, July 18 through Friday, July 22 from 8 am to 12 pm at Cary Academy. In addition, students will need to devote additional time independently working on rhetorical skills and practicing/writing speeches for and against pieces of legislation (congress bills) that we will be debating. For new participants in the camp, there will be an introductory camp curriculum and for returning participants there will be an advanced congress camp curriculum.
